Copyright and Fair Use SR

1. I found the first question to be surprising because with all of the copyright laws with books it seems like nothing can be copied. It seems like EVERYTHING is protected. I have had many classes where the teacher had said that they couldn't copy something for us due to copyright laws.
2. Question two I found to be surprising because it said that if a school buys photoshop the school can distribute it on the server but cannot install it on everybody's computers. I thought this was surprising because as long as you distribute it through the server it is Okay which does not seem much different to me. They said that you can keep track of where it is being used better but it seems like that is not the big problem. Students would have to buy it separately if it were not distributed which seems to be what the company would want (more money).
3. Question 7 I found to be surprising because if a site is protected for students and faculty only and the teacher posts homework on it with items that do not have copyright permission then it is still okay as long as the site is protected. I thought this was surprising because the students and their family can still view the information. Why can they see it and the outside world cannot? What makes the difference?
4. Number ten i thought to be surprising because it seems as though if you have clip-art that you get from file-sharing sites you should be able to redistribute the clip-art if you can use it in class. I do not understand why it is okay to use the information in class but not distribute it because your students are using it. It just seems like the copyright laws are too strict.
5. Number twelve was surprising to me. The answer was especially surprising. It surprises me that stations are stopping people from being able to use clips and digitalize it. This makes me angry that nobody has stopped them from taking away a constitutional right. I do not think people realize this is going on.
6. Number fourteen is really surprising because it talks about how if you show a Disney movie you need permission. I think I had heard of this before but I was equally surprised then. People get together to watch movies all of the time it just seems like the companies want money. I guess to get around that you simply cannot have a formal gathering.
7. Number nineteen is not only surprising to me but makes me angry. I cannot believe that you can use clips of a song and that it okay but not the whole song. You cannot use songs when creating a digital yearbook because it is not instructional but why is it okay when it is instructional?
8. Number twenty was surprising because it talked about how if something is copyrighted under fair use it can be used for educational reasons but cannot be sold. I think if you copy something using specific guidelines then you should be able to do whatever you want with it. There are so many copyright laws that I do not understand.
